What Sets Our Driveway Work Apart

Interlock is a smart choice for a reason. Driveway pavers, natural stone, concrete pavers, interlocking brick pavers, and permeable pavers create stunning interlocking driveways with endless design possibilities that enhance your home’s curb appeal and aesthetic appeal. Unlike an asphalt driveway, damaged pavers can be replaced individually, and a properly built base helps ensure proper drainage, minimize weed growth, and withstand heavy traffic.

As an experienced interlocking driveway contractor in Toronto, we handle every interlock driveway installation, driveway extension, walkway interlocking, interlocking patio, pool decks, and front entrance project from start to finish. We help you choose the right paving stones or natural stone pavers, avoid costly DIY installation mistakes, and keep your driveway interlocking cost under control.

Unforeseen conditions can affect any project, from extensive excavation to challenging site access, but our team knows how to adapt while staying on schedule. AHS also provides maintenance services, can completely seal your new surface when appropriate, and build visually appealing outdoor spaces that perform well for years—even after countless passes with a snow shovel.

Our Sink-Proof Installation Process, Step by Step

A sunken or shifting driveway kills curb appeal and leads to costly repairs. The fix is in the base — so we build ours to handle heavy vehicles, foot traffic, and Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles. Here’s exactly how we do it.

Step 1: Excavation

Where the existing base is too shallow, we excavate to make room for a proper foundation — 6–10 inches of gravel for patios and up to 18 inches for driveways, plus the depth of the pavers themselves. A deep, correctly prepared base is what stops a driveway from sinking or shifting later.

Step 2: Geotextile Stabilization

Every driveway we install includes a geotextile layer that stabilizes the ground and prevents shifting. The fabric separates the native soil, sand, or clay from the new gravel base, so the two don’t mix, and the gravel doesn’t sink — the same approach used in municipal and commercial construction.

Step 3: Gravel Base and Compaction

Next, we build the structural base with high-quality gravel over the geotextile, then compact it with commercial-grade equipment weighing up to 2,000 lbs — compaction on par with road construction. Proper compaction here is what keeps the surface from settling or heaving down the road.

Step 4: High-Performance Bedding Layer

We level the base with High-Performance Bedding (HPB). Because HPB is fully permeable, it doesn’t hold moisture — which reduces frost movement in winter, promotes drainage, and prevents the water accumulation that leads to shifting.

Step 5: Paver Laying and Finishing

With the base complete, we set the pavers and fill the joints with polymeric sand, which hardens to lock the stones together. We compact the surface so the sand settles into the joints, then apply a second pass to fully seal the interlock and guard against movement.

Permits, Grading and Bylaws to Know Before You Dig

A new or widened driveway isn’t only a construction question — it’s a municipal one. If you’re widening the driveway or adding a new curb cut, most GTA municipalities require a permit, and work on the city boulevard often needs an encroachment agreement. Several municipalities, including Toronto and Mississauga, also limit how much of a front yard can be paved and encourage or require permeable surfaces to manage stormwater runoff.

Lot grading matters too: your driveway has to shed water onto your own property, not a neighbour’s, and many municipalities check grading before sign-off. And before any excavation, underground utilities have to be located through Ontario One Call — a free but essential step that keeps the dig safe.

We manage this side of the project for you: confirming what your municipality requires, applying for the permits, arranging locates, and building to the grading rules so your driveway is compliant and inspection-ready.

How Much Does an Interlocking Driveway Cost in the GTA?

An interlocking driveway in Toronto and across the GTA runs about $24–$55 per square foot installed. Where your project lands in that range comes down to a few factors:

  • Driveway size: larger driveways need more materials and crew hours; cost is calculated per square foot.
  • Crew mobilization (fixed cost): getting tools and equipment to your site — tight access that blocks larger equipment adds time and labour.
  • Gravel delivery (fixed cost): a delivery truck is required regardless of volume, so material delivery is built into every project.
  • Type of stone: budget pavers run $3–$4 per sq ft (not recommended), mid-range stone $6–$7, and premium stone $8–$15.
  • Base condition: excavation reveals the state of your existing gravel base and sets how much foundation work is needed.

As a benchmark, a 1,000 sq ft driveway typically runs $30,000–$45,000 if it needs a brand-new gravel base, or $24,000–$35,000 over a sound existing base. Whether you want new pavers or driveway maintenance, we also build matching walkways, patios, outdoor kitchens, and front- and back-yard features to tie the whole exterior together. Add Radiant Heat for a Snow-Free Driveway

Pairing interlock with a heated driveway system means no shovelling and no ice all winter — the radiant system melts snow as it falls. There are two main options:

Electric System

Thin heating cables sit under the pavers, so the system needs no extra space and costs less to install. It takes a little longer to warm up, which makes it a great fit for small and mid-sized driveways.

Hydronic System

A closed loop of tubing carries warm fluid from a compact boiler — as small as 2′ × 2′ — usually set in the garage or basement. It gives up a little storage space, but heats faster and runs more efficiently, which pays off on larger driveways.

Both options are covered in detail on our heated driveway page, where installed pricing runs about $19–$45 per square foot depending on the system.

Built-In Lighting for Curb Appeal and Safety

Lighting set into the interlock adds a striking design element that sets your home apart from others on the street. Beyond looks, illuminating the driveway and pathways improves security and makes the approach safer to navigate after dark.

When you build with us, you can have both the look and the function. Our team designs the lighting layout alongside the paving so the fixtures enhance the pattern, lift curb appeal, and add everyday safety — a finished driveway that works as well at night as it does in daylight.

Extending Your Driveway for Extra Parking

If your driveway only fits one car, an extension is worth considering. Widening the interlock adds room for a second vehicle and guest parking, keeps you from parking on the road, and protects your car in the process — all while adding curb appeal that complements the existing driveway.

Our installers extend driveways through a straightforward, efficient process and can landscape the surrounding area so the addition looks original to the home rather than tacked on. It’s a practical upgrade that modernizes the property’s front.

Why a Paver Border Is Worth Adding

Interlocking driveways already add value and curb appeal — a border takes them further. Framing the driveway in a contrasting paver is a small detail with an outsized effect, and it’s one of the easiest ways to make the whole surface look custom.

A Sharper, Finished Look

A well-designed border defines the edges and makes the driveway pop, giving it a polished, intentional look. If you’re thinking about selling, that finished detail is an easy way to lift perceived value at the curb.

Edge Protection That Lasts

A border also protects the driveway’s most vulnerable point — the edges — from snow plows, lawnmowers, and everyday wear. Keeping that stress off the perimeter helps the whole driveway hold its shape and last longer.

Locked-In, Low-Maintenance Joints

We fill the joints with polymeric sand, then compact the surface and apply a second pass so the sand settles fully. That double-compaction locks the pavers together, strengthens the joints, and helps keep weeds from taking hold.

Build the Driveway Your Home Deserves

Your driveway takes up a big share of your home’s frontage, so it’s worth getting right. Interlocking is one of the most effective ways to lift curb appeal in Toronto — and whether it’s a 1-car, 2-car, or 4-car driveway, our team can design one you’ll love for years.

Your project deserves a crew that prioritizes efficiency, quality, and professionalism. We use 3D visualization so you can explore design and customization options before work starts, and we source high-quality materials from top Canadian manufacturers. With organized in-house teams, your project runs smoothly from the first consultation to the final seal.

Action Home Services has transformed hundreds of driveways across Toronto and the GTA, and we’re ready to do the same for yours. Call our team today to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

?
How much does an interlocking driveway cost?

An interlocking driveway costs about $24–$55 per square foot installed in the GTA. A 1,000-square-foot driveway typically runs $30,000–$55,000 if a new gravel base is needed, or $24,000–$35,000 over a sound existing base. Paver choice, site access, and excavation depth are the biggest cost variables.

?
How much does labour cost to install an interlocking driveway?

Labour is built into the installed price of $24–$55 per square foot rather than billed separately. The labour share rises with site conditions — tight downtown access, deep excavation, heavy large-format pavers, or intricate patterns all add crew hours. Your written quote breaks down the full scope after an on-site measure.

?
What is the average size of an interlocking paver?

Paver sizes vary widely. Common residential units range from small 4″ × 8″ stones up to large-format pavers around 12″ × 24″, plus multi-size pattern kits. We help you choose a size and pattern that suit the scale of your driveway and hold up under vehicle traffic and freeze-thaw cycles.

?
Can you install pavers over an existing concrete slab?

Sometimes. Pavers can be laid over a sound, well-draining concrete slab using a bedding layer, but cracked or heaving concrete should be removed so the base can be rebuilt properly. We assess the slab’s condition and drainage first, then recommend an overlay or a full rebuild — whichever will stay level.

?
Do you have to reseal interlocking pavers?

Sealing is optional but recommended every 3–5 years. It deepens the colour, resists oil and salt stains, and helps lock the polymeric sand in the joints. In Ontario, freeze-thaw cycles and winter road salt make periodic sealing a worthwhile step for any driveway that sees regular use.

?
How long does an interlocking driveway last?

A well-built interlocking driveway lasts for decades on a properly compacted base. Lifespan depends on material quality, traffic load, climate, and maintenance. Because individual pavers can be lifted and reset, an interlock driveway is easier to maintain over time than a poured concrete surface. We’ll help you choose durable materials.

?
Do you provide a warranty against settlement or sinking?

Yes. We provide a warranty against settlement and frost heave — common issues in Ontario’s freeze-thaw climate — backed by our 10-year labour warranty. The protection starts with the build: proper excavation, geotextile, deep compaction, and permeable bedding are what prevent sinking in the first place.

?
Can I install an interlocking driveway myself?

You can, but interlock demands precise excavation, grading, and compaction, and small base errors lead to major problems like sinking within a few seasons. For a driveway that stays level and looks sharp, professional installation is the safer investment — especially given Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles and the weight a driveway carries.

?
Can damaged sections of an interlocking driveway be repaired?

Yes — and it’s a major advantage of interlock. Repairs are usually localized rather than full replacement: cracked, stained, or uneven pavers can be lifted and replaced individually. That makes maintenance more practical and often more cost-effective than patching a solid concrete surface. Our team can inspect and handle targeted repairs.
