Interlocking Driveway and Paving In Toronto and GTA

A sunken or shifting driveway kills curb appeal and leads to costly repairs. The fix is in the base — so we build ours to handle heavy vehicles, foot traffic, and Ontario’s freeze-thaw cycles. Here’s exactly how we do it.

Step 1: Excavation

Where the existing base is too shallow, we excavate to make room for a proper foundation — 6–10 inches of gravel for patios and up to 18 inches for driveways, plus the depth of the pavers themselves. A deep, correctly prepared base is what stops a driveway from sinking or shifting later.

Step 2: Geotextile Stabilization

Every driveway we install includes a geotextile layer that stabilizes the ground and prevents shifting. The fabric separates the native soil, sand, or clay from the new gravel base, so the two don’t mix, and the gravel doesn’t sink — the same approach used in municipal and commercial construction.

A new or widened driveway isn’t only a construction question — it’s a municipal one. If you’re widening the driveway or adding a new curb cut, most GTA municipalities require a permit, and work on the city boulevard often needs an encroachment agreement. Several municipalities, including Toronto and Mississauga, also limit how much of a front yard can be paved and encourage or require permeable surfaces to manage stormwater runoff.

Lot grading matters too: your driveway has to shed water onto your own property, not a neighbour’s, and many municipalities check grading before sign-off. And before any excavation, underground utilities have to be located through Ontario One Call — a free but essential step that keeps the dig safe.

Pairing interlock with a heated driveway system means no shovelling and no ice all winter — the radiant system melts snow as it falls. There are two main options:

Electric System

Thin heating cables sit under the pavers, so the system needs no extra space and costs less to install. It takes a little longer to warm up, which makes it a great fit for small and mid-sized driveways.

Hydronic System

A closed loop of tubing carries warm fluid from a compact boiler — as small as 2′ × 2′ — usually set in the garage or basement. It gives up a little storage space, but heats faster and runs more efficiently, which pays off on larger driveways.

Locked-In, Low-Maintenance Joints

We fill the joints with polymeric sand, then compact the surface and apply a second pass so the sand settles fully. That double-compaction locks the pavers together, strengthens the joints, and helps keep weeds from taking hold.
