How We Design & Install Concrete In-Ground Pools

Our design and build process for all of our pools always prioritizes the customer. We build custom swimming pools for you and no one else… and our process reflects this.

1. Free Consultation: All of our services begin with a free at-home consultation. This is where our concrete pool contractors will start to understand your vision, take measurements and provide professional recommendations.

2. Initial Designs: Once we have an understanding of what you want, our designers will create 3D renderings of your new pool.

3. Design Adjustments: Here, we will work with you to make any adjustments to the design of your pool, providing new renderings until you are happy.

4. Final Design Confirmation & Book Install Date: Once you are happy with the design of your new custom concrete pool, you will sign off on the designs and book your install date.

5. Installation Time: Now the fun stuff, we will start excavating, filling and building your new pool. This can take anywhere between 8-12 weeks but we will provide you with an accurate timeline once the project is confirmed.

6. Landscaping, Decking & Final Reveal. Our landscaping services tie everything together — patios, plantings, lighting, outdoor kitchens, and pergolas. We hand you a finished backyard, not a hole with water in it.

Toronto Pool Permits, Bylaws & What You Need to Know

Before any swimming pool construction starts in Toronto, the City requires a Pool Enclosure Permit under Municipal Code Chapter 447. Key points to be aware of:

– A pool enclosure (fence) must be at least 1.2 metres high and fully surround the pool area

– Self-closing, self-latching gates are required, with latches mounted at least 1.5 m off the ground

– Setbacks from property lines and structures must follow local building codes — typically a minimum of 1.2 m from rear and side lot lines

– If your property is near a ravine or regulated watercourse, a TRCA permit may also be required

– Hot tubs and spas have their own enclosure rules

Neighbouring municipalities (Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Mississauga, Oakville) have their own variations, and we handle the full application on your behalf. Our project managers know the inspectors, the timing, and the safety regulations — that’s part of why our builds rarely face delays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about pool installation, maintenance, pricing, timelines, and requirements to help you plan your project confidently.

?
How much does a concrete pool cost?

Concrete pool typically ranges from $150,000 to $500,000. Labour costs will vary anywhere from $40,000-$200,000.

?
What is the typical longevity of a concrete pool?

The structural shell can last over 50 years, while the interior finishes typically need refreshing every 7 to 20 years depending on the material. With routine maintenance and periodic resurfacing, these pools can easily serve a household for generations.

?
What are the different interior finishes of a concrete pool?

Options range from traditional plaster (7–15 years) and durable aggregate finishes like pebble or quartz (15–20+ years) to premium tile. Tile is the most expensive and customizable option, often lasting over 20 years.

?
Why is the concrete pool the most customizable?

Since they are built on-site from scratch, there are no limits on shape, size, or depth. You can seamlessly incorporate bespoke features like vanishing edges, swim-up bars, beach entries, and integrated spas to fit any backyard layout.

?
Is it a good idea to install a concrete pool in Canada?

Yes, concrete pools are highly durable and well-suited for the Canadian climate when designed to handle freeze-thaw cycles. Proper winterization is the only mandatory step to protect the plumbing and equipment from freezing temperatures.

?
Can I install a concrete pool myself?

No, this is a complex multi-trade project requiring structural engineering, specialized equipment, and precise permits. Attempting a DIY installation carries high risks of structural failure and legal complications; hiring a pro is essential.

?
How do I choose the correct contractor when choosing a concrete pool?

Look for a contractor with a dedicated portfolio of concrete projects and a solid understanding of Ontario’s permit and insurance requirements. Be sure to check references for pools that are at least five years old to ensure their work stands the test of time.

?
Can I build a concrete pool without a permit?

No, all in-ground pools in Ontario require a building permit to ensure compliance with safety, zoning, and drainage laws. Building without one can lead to heavy fines or the forced removal of the pool.

?
Can I renovate a concrete pool?

Yes, concrete pools are the most renovatable type because the shell is a permanent structure. You can easily update the interior finish, replace tiles, or even reshape the steps and benches during a renovation.

?
What is the typical process involved in the renovation of a concrete pool?

The process involves draining the pool, removing the old finish, and performing any necessary structural repairs before applying a new finish. While cosmetic updates take 2–4 weeks, major structural changes can take up to 8 weeks.

?
What happens if the concrete pool cracks?

Surface cracks are usually cosmetic and easily patched, but structural cracks in the shell require professional evaluation. Experts typically use epoxy injections or hydraulic cement to seal leaks and prevent further damage.

?
How do I find a leak in a concrete pool?

You can start with a “bucket test” to compare evaporation rates, followed by professional dye testing around fixtures. For hidden leaks, specialists use pressure testing on plumbing lines and underwater cameras to pinpoint the source.

?
Is it a good idea to have a concrete pool running year-round?

It is generally not recommended in Ontario due to extreme heating costs and the risk of ice damage to the plumbing. Most owners opt for a seasonal schedule, properly closing the pool in winter to protect their investment.
