A green roof is an engineered assembly, not soil spread over an existing roof. The Toronto Green Roof Construction Standard sets the minimum requirements: a root repellent system, a drainage system, a filtering layer, a growing medium and plants, over a waterproof membrane. Each layer fails differently when it is left out.
- Root barrier. The root repellent system keeps roots off the waterproofing membrane, and the standard requires one in every vegetated roofing system.
- Drainage and retention layer. Holds water for the plants, drains the rest, and keeps vegetation-free zones clear at every roof drain.
- Filter fabric. Stops fines from the growing medium washing into the drainage layer and blocking it.
- Growing medium. Engineered lightweight substrate, not garden soil, at a minimum depth of 100 mm under the Toronto standard.
- Green roof plants. Sedum mats, plugs, grasses or garden planting, with suitable plants chosen for the depth above.
Get the specification wrong, and the failure surfaces years later, buried under saturated substrate, where reaching it means lifting the planting.
