Retaining Wall Design Tailored to Your Property

For us, wooden retaining wall planning is all about you. Your vision, your property, and your preferred budget.

At Action Home Services, we understand that no two retaining wall installation projects are alike, and we keep it that way. Instead of implementing cookie-cutter retaining wall plans, we work closely with you to understand your unique needs related to landscape stability, appearance, and long-term performance of your wall and the entire landscape.

We consider the soil-related properties when designing wooden retaining walls. For instance, clay soil is common in Toronto suburbs, while sand soil is common in properties near the lakefront. Given that clay exerts more pressure than sandy soil, retaining walls in the suburbs may require more reinforcements. Other factors that we consider include preferred integrated lighting, planters, and more.

During the design phase of your retaining wall, we use advanced 3D modeling to visualize different wood types for retaining walls. The most common materials include pressure-treated pine, western red cedar, Douglas fir, and more. When previewing the retaining wall’s design and aesthetic appeal, you can request necessary adjustments. Remember, we aim to align the final design with your vision.

Our Wooden Retaining Wall Installation Process

Wooden retaining walls can fail for several reasons if they are not built properly from the start. One of the most common issues is water buildup behind the wall due to poor drainage. Freeze-thaw cycles and frost heave can also exert extra pressure on the wall and lead to shifting over time. In addition, lower-quality wood may deteriorate because of fungal rot, moisture exposure, or insect damage.

To help prevent these issues, the AHS team focuses on precise installation, proper drainage planning, and high-quality wood selection so every retaining wall is built to a municipal-level standard. That’s why we create a robust base for wooden retaining walls. Here is the construction process we follow to ensure proper wooden retaining wall installation.

Step 1: Excavation

After carefully assessing your landscape and creating a thoughtful retaining wall design, we’ll begin the excavation process. In most cases, we excavate approximately 6 to 12 inches below grade, depending on the wall design, site conditions, and structural requirements. This creates the space needed for a stable base and proper wall support.

Step 2: Geotextile Installation

After excavation, we install geotextile fabric to improve the long-term stability of the retaining wall system. This material is commonly used in commercial construction because it helps separate the soil from the gravel base, reducing contamination and preserving drainage performance.

It also helps prevent shifting between layers and supports structural integrity over time, even if the underlying soil experiences movement or settling.

Step 3: Gravel Base & Compaction

Once the geotextile is in place, we install a high-quality gravel base and compact it thoroughly to create a strong foundation for the wall. We use commercial-grade diesel reversible plate compactors, with some equipment weighing up to 2,000 pounds, to achieve a high level of compaction.

This approach helps deliver results similar to road construction standards, which means improved base stability and reduced risk of settlement later on.

Step 4: Drainage System Installation

Proper drainage is one of the most important parts of a successful wooden retaining wall installation. To reduce pressure from trapped water, we install a drainage system behind the wall, which may include a weeping tile system (perforated pipe) along with a gravel drainage layer.

An efficient drainage system helps direct water away from the wooden retaining wall, lowers the risk of water buildup, and protects the wall from added stress over time. Without proper drainage, water may accumulate behind the wall, which could weaken it or lead to rot over time.

Step 5: Building and Reinforcing the Wall

To strengthen the wooden wall after installation, we install an appropriate reinforcement system based on the design and site conditions. For wooden retaining walls, this often includes a deadman system, which helps anchor the wall into the surrounding soil for added resistance against forward movement.

This reinforcement improves the wall’s overall stability and helps it withstand the pressure of retained soil. Proper installation of such walls can help transform your outdoor space by preventing soil erosion, stabilizing the ground, and more.

What are the Benefits of Wooden Retaining Walls?

At Action Home Services, we provide comprehensive retaining wall solutions to create terraced gardens, prevent soil erosion, support raised garden beds, and provide structural support for driveways. We can also design and build retaining walls to define property lines or to support multi-level yards.  In addition to wooden retaining walls, here are other types of retaining walls we build.

  • Gravity retaining walls
  • Armour stone walls
  • Cantilever retaining walls
  • Concrete retaining walls

Here are the top benefits of installing wooden retaining walls on homes and commercial properties in Toronto and the GTA.

Better Aesthetic Appeal

Wooden retaining walls bring a warm, natural look to your landscape and can make outdoor spaces feel more inviting. Their texture and colour work especially well in gardens, planting beds, and softer landscape designs. Rather than looking overly harsh or industrial, a wooden wall can feel like a more natural part of the yard and blend more easily with surrounding greenery.

Wooden Retaining Walls are Cost-Effective

In many cases, wooden retaining walls are a more budget-friendly option than alternatives, such as stone or concrete. They can still provide reliable ground support while keeping initial construction costs lower. For homeowners who want to improve the structure and appearance of their landscape without taking on a much larger investment, wood can offer strong practical value.

Easy to Install

Compared to heavier retaining wall materials, such as concrete blocks, wood is often quicker and easier to install. This can help reduce labour time, simplify the construction process, and ensure your project moves forward more efficiently. A more streamlined installation can also mean less disruption to your routine. At AHS, we allow flexible scheduling.

Versatile Retaining Walls

Wooden retaining walls can be used in a wide range of landscape applications, from small garden tiers to larger projects that help manage grading changes. They can be built in different heights, layouts, and configurations, depending on the terrain and your goals. This flexibility makes wooden retaining walls a practical choice for many different yard shapes and outdoor design goals.

Eco-friendly

Wood is a natural material, which makes it an appealing choice for homeowners looking for a more eco-friendly retaining wall option. When sourced responsibly, it can have a lower environmental impact than some other construction materials. It also suits landscapes that aim for a more natural and balanced outdoor design while still providing the support and function a retaining wall needs.
