We wanted to get a deck done just like everyone else this summer and found John and his team from Action Home Services on Homestars. Price is competitive with other companies, but I found that GSU’s estimates were the most detailed and clear.

From the first call, John was friendly, honest and transparent around the process, lead time and cost. He guided us through the process and kept us updated on timing and project status.

The crew led by Mike and Antony did a spectacular job and was very easy to work with. Quality workmanship and appreciated the fact they always made time to answer questions. Also appreciated that they tidied up at the end of the day. The little things that make a difference with great service! We are really happy with the end results of the deck!

This was the second time we used AHS for an outdoor reno. This time, John, Renat, and their team did an amazing job completely transforming our backyard from unusable space to a modern deck and patio.

Even with the delays due to the lumber shortage over the summer/fall, everything went smoothly, and frequent communication helped keep our minds at ease.

We were so impressed with Action Home Services from initial contact for a quote to the completion of our project. Shortly after I posted my project as ready to hire on Homestars, John contacted me and we set a time to meet. John made a very good impression. He was on time, understood what we wanted to get done and had great suggestions for things we hadn’t thought all the way through. We met with three other contractors and the amount quoted from Action Home Services was comparable and competitive. What I appreciated most though, that really made Action Home Services stand out was the level of detail that was included in their quote. There was absolutely nothing missed on this quote, so I felt confident that I was not missing anything that could significantly add to the overall cost in the end. John is very responsive via phone and email. I had questions along the way and he responded very quickly and updated the quote if necessary.

When the project started, we were blown away by their professionalism. They arrived the evening before they started to drop off their equipment and depending on what was getting done on any of the days they were here (eg: demolition, interlocking, cedar deck, landscaping lighting, sodding, planting, etc.), there were several people working. I mention this because in the past we have had work done by contractors with smaller operations and this experience just took it to a whole new level! Action Home Services completed our project in less than two weeks. They always arrived on time and were such a hard-working team! Neighbours on our street were also impressed and hired them for a project as well.

Our project manager Renate was wonderful to work with and everyone on the team was so professional and polite. They were so organized and coordinated and genuinely seemed to enjoy their work and working together. It was truly a pleasure to have Action Home Services complete our project. They made us feel valued and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who is looking for a reliable landscaping contractor.

Back in 2016, we hired a contractor to replace our deck and install a new one based on a larger design. Needless to say they did not know what they were doing and misinformed us on the need for a permit. When the City caught us in 2017 and issued an Order to Comply we were forced to proceed to Committee of Adjustments to approve the structure. When we got that approval in 2018 and submitted the structure’s design for a building permit, we received the permit in 2019 yet the Building Inspector informed us the structure was under-supported and needed to be completely replaced and the City required us to comply immediately.

After tendering a few quotes we discovered our neighbours had recently had their backyard redone using AHS. We got a comprehensive quote from their rep John and an approximate start date. Since we wanted to close the file with the City and asked John & AHS about performing the work in the winter, they assured us that they work year-round and can compensate for cold weather (particularly with pouring and curing concrete for the support pillars) and asked that they follow the plans as approved by the City and to coordinate any exceptions or changes with the assigned Building Inspector.

With the combination of a diligent and skilled team, including the assigned PM Eugene, and having the luck of an unseasonably warmer Holiday season, we managed to have the old deck removed, old pillars dug out, new supports dug and passed inspection, and the new deck and stones installed and ready for final inspection within a two week period (not including taking breaks for Sundays, Christmas, and Boxing Day. There were three small fixes that needed attention (not related to inspection) and they managed to get it done the day of.

John, Eugene, and their team did a great job and were completely available for questions and transparent in the needs, timing, and, when scope changed, costs. The crew on site arrived at 7am sharp (even before sunrise as the earliest allowed time for noise per bylaws) and worked as close to 7pm, putting in full days.

You can tell by their equipment (which they own and not just rent), their skills, and the supplies they use that AHS takes every project seriously and know that their reputation is based on every job they do, taking pride in their work.

I will definitely be using AHS for my next home projects and recommend their work, especially considering how they handled it all with regards to the City scrutiny and weather they had to manage.

Best to check your city’s bylaws, but in most cases, if a deck is over a certain square footage, and/or is higher than 24″ off the ground, it would require a permit.
