Design Trends:

2023 trends have started to change, COVID has given everyone, clients and suppliers, a different outlook on the landscape community as whole. We are seeing a shift in trends this year leaning toward greener industries and placing more emphasis on the human connection with nature. This is creating an increase in people wanting to feel a sense of place, purpose and home even when we have space limitations. A few of the major design trends we noticed from this past year include:

  • Sustainable Landscaping: The emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable landscaping practices has been growing. This includes the use of native plants, drought-resistant species, rain gardens, and permeable paving to reduce water consumption and promote biodiversity.
  • Outdoor Living Spaces: The integration of functional outdoor living spaces continues to be a trend. This includes well-designed patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens that extend the living space into the outdoors, creating areas for relaxation and entertainment.
  • Wildlife-Friendly Gardens: Landscapes designed to attract and support local wildlife, such as birds, bees, and butterflies, have become more popular. Planting native flowers, shrubs, and trees that provide food and shelter for wildlife is a key aspect of this trend.
  • Smart Landscaping: Integration of smart technology in landscaping, such as automated irrigation systems, smart lighting, and climate-responsive features. These technologies enhance efficiency and allow for better control and monitoring of outdoor spaces.
  • Low-Maintenance Gardens: With busy lifestyles, there's a growing preference for low-maintenance gardens. This involves choosing plants that are easy to care for, incorporating hardscape elements, and using mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
  • Naturalistic Water Features: Natural and sustainable water features, such as ponds and water gardens, are gaining popularity. These features often incorporate native aquatic plants and create a harmonious environment that attracts wildlife.
  • Vertical Gardening: Utilizing vertical spaces for planting, whether it's vertical gardens, green walls, or trellises, is a trend that maximizes space and adds a visually striking element to the landscape, especially within the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Oversized Design Style: This year clients have been drawn to simple line work within outdoor spaces. This includes the use of oversized paving including interlock, flagstone and porcelain. This not only looks cleaner and less busy but also adds a modern touch that looks appealing and minimalistic. This also applies to plants. We are seeing trends of clientele wanting instant lush gardens. We can achieve this by filling spaces with mature planting material to the best of our abilities.
  • Biophilic Design:Biophilic design principles, which aim to incorporate natural elements into the built environment, are being applied to landscaping. This may involve using natural materials, emphasizing plant life, and creating spaces that connect people with nature.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on landscape design trends in 2023, I recommend checking with reputable landscaping and design sources, attending industry events, or consulting with professional landscape designers who stay abreast of the latest trends and innovations in the field.

Featured Projects and Highlights:

1.Terrace by the water : Ensure the safety of your children while transforming your outdoor space into a captivating oasis! Imagine crafting a delightful puzzle, where each piece     maximizes every square inch of your property. Step by step, we weave together a tapestry featuring elements like inviting decking solutions, a spacious pool, privacy trees, a secluded outdoor living room, and even a luxurious hot tub. Witness the organic evolution of a thoughtfully curated backyard sanctuary, where each component harmoniously contributes to a tranquil and beautiful landscape.

2.Motion of Fanning : The journey is created by experiencing how each space tells the story from its own importance and to the next one. Each space will pass on its story from one space to another. It all starts with a more vigorous action packed area such as the active space formed by an elevated deck and overhanging balcony. The journey will then continue off to an inviting natural stone pathway that allows its user to gaze upon the landscape, and with a few more steps, they will be introduced to the lower oasis area. Nested at the bottom of the property is the comforting traditional kidney pool, with a warm and inviting pool house. One can stay in there for days if they truly choose to, and not be separated from the comfort of your home.

3.The Poster Boi : Alright guys, I want to golf, dip in the pool, and chill with all my big party friends, what did you get for me? Here is where we start using our classical tetris movement, where we lighten our thoughts and start juggling all the pieces together into a one well rounded space. The swim spa being the major focus that allows us to create a privacy deck space; which acts as a parallel balance to the seating area just on the opposite side of the yard. The golfing space then ties the two together being the bridging element, that too also has a parallel of its own with a viewing Eastern garden off to the back.

4.Tsugite: Similar to the intricate craftsmanship of traditional Japanese wood joints, each component in this landscaping project has undergone meticulous carving, planing, and shaving to seamlessly integrate with the others. The result is a robust connection between spaces, akin to the strength found in well-crafted joints. As one embarks on a journey across the composite bridge, they will encounter a symphony of carefully orchestrated elements. Transitioning through diverse rooms that prompt changes in elevation, the landscape comes alive, fostering dynamic shifts in mood and ambiance.

5.OOO's: Transforming a triangular backyard into a harmonious outdoor haven is an exciting venture! Our latest project kicked off with a printed blueprint and the creative touch of a coffee cup, methodically mapping out three strategically positioned rings. The magic unfolds at the intersection of these rings, where each element serves a distinct purpose in crafting an inviting landscape. Some areas bloom into vibrant gardens, others seamlessly transition into inviting patio spaces, and a few cleverly morph into cozy bench seating zones. This dynamic fusion not only imbues the space with purposeful functionality but also optimizes every inch to create a well-designed outdoor oasis.
