Heavy-Duty Retention Wall with Geogrid
We recently completed an essential project in Toronto for a family in need of a soil retention wall for their front yard. This project addressed significant erosion issues in their yard. Here’s a detailed look at how the soil retention wall makes a difference for this property and the steps involved in its construction.
Soil retention walls are crucial for holding back soil and preventing erosion, especially on sloped areas. In addition, they provide a stable structure that keeps soil in place, reducing the risk of landslides and washouts. In addition to their functional benefits, soil retention walls can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a landscape to create defined spaces and add a polished look to the property.
For this Toronto home, the front yard had a noticeable slope, which caused soil erosion and made the area difficult to maintain. We excavated the area, carefully digging a trench to ensure a solid foundation for the wall. A base of crushed stone was laid to provide stability and proper drainage, which is crucial for the wall’s longevity.
To reinforce the structure, we used a geogrid material, which was laid between layers of soil and wall blocks to prevent shifting and ensure the wall could withstand pressure from the soil behind it. Additionally, we constructed the wall using high-quality concrete blocks designed specifically for retaining purposes. We placed each block evenly so they were level and securely interlocked, and we utilized built-in grooves and lips that enhanced the wall’s stability.
As we built the wall, we backfilled it with gravel to promote drainage and reduce hydrostatic pressure. Proper drainage is vital to prevent water buildup, which can compromise the wall’s integrity. Once the wall was complete, we added a top layer of soil and completed the landscaping with low-maintenance greenery. As a result, the front yard is secure and erosion is more maintainable, if not irrelevant!
Key Takeaways
- Stability: The new soil retention wall effectively holds the soil in place, preventing erosion and creating a stable front yard.
- Enhanced Curb Appeal: The wall adds a clean, modern look to the front yard, significantly boosting the home’s curb appeal.
- Durability: Constructed with high-quality materials and reinforced with geogrid, the wall is designed for long-term durability.
- Functional Design: The incorporation of proper drainage makes the wall withstand environmental pressures and maintain its integrity over time.
