Most North York homes get renovated in pieces. This one did not. The owners came to Action Home Services wanting the pool area rebuilt, a covered space they could sit in through a rainy evening, and a front yard that stopped looking like it belonged to a different house. We took the whole property at once, with our own designers, project managers and crews on every trade.
The pool came first, because everything else had to be set off it. The concrete shell was refinished in white marbelite, which lifts the colour of the water and gives a clean surface to read against the stone. Cobalt gloss tile runs the waterline. The pool renovation was closed out with Unilock Urban fullnose coping in Sterling, picked to carry the edge of the water into the paving without a visible break.
The deck is 1,063 square feet of Trex Transcend Lineage in Jasper, and it is the piece our deck builder spent the longest on: engineered framing, concrete footings, a pressure-treated side landing, railings to match. Over it sits a 20 by 25 foot aluminum pergola in a wood-tone finish. The louvers are motorized, so the roof opens to the sky or shuts against rain. Add integrated LED lighting, bug screens on all four sides, two heaters and a fan, and the outdoor space works from April well into October.
The outdoor kitchen was framed on site rather than dropped in as a unit, clad in natural stone veneer in flagstone, and finished with a 3 cm granite counter and a mitred waterfall edge. Gas and electrical run to it directly. More than 2,300 square feet of Unilock Beacon Hill Smooth in opal blend spreads out around it across the patio, the walkways and the landings, held by U-Cara block steps and retaining walls, Urban chamfered coping in Sterling, and a garden curb along the beds.
Out front, a new asphalt driveway went down with Beacon Hill soldier-course borders, then an interlock extension, a matching walkway, block steps and river rock garden beds. Thirty-one low-voltage fixtures light the property: in-ground and coping lights through the backyard, front and side yard lighting so the approach still works at eleven at night.
None of the structural elements are visible now. The deck sits on footings below the frost line, the interlocking pavers went over a compacted granular base, the retaining walls were built to drain. That part of the installation process is the part nobody photographs, and it is the only reason the surfaces will still be flat after ten Canadian winters. Pool, deck, pergola, kitchen, stonework, driveway and lighting. One crew, one schedule.
