Asphalt: What’s It Made Of?
Different types of asphalt mixtures

What's The Difference Between HL3, HL3a, HL5 and HL8 Asphalts And What Are They Used For?

Asphalt is a versatile material used in various construction projects, particularly in road construction. The terms HL5, HL8, HL3, and HL3a refer to different types or grades of asphalt mixtures commonly used in pavement construction. Here's an explanation of each:

HL5 (Hot Mix Asphalt Level 5):

  • HL5 is a dense-graded asphalt mixture commonly used for heavy-duty pavements, such as highways and arterial roads where high traffic volumes and heavy loads are expected.
  • It consists of a higher proportion of coarse aggregates, which provides better resistance to rutting and deformation under heavy traffic.
  • This mix is not typically used in Canada/does not exist in Canada. It is not nearly as durable or suitable for the Canadian winters and overall, long lasting durability.

HL8 (Hot Mix Asphalt Level 8):

  • HL8 is also a dense-graded asphalt mixture but with a finer aggregate gradation compared to HL5.
  • It is typically used for intermediate applications, such as collector roads and urban streets where moderate traffic loads are anticipated.
  • This mis is used as a base coat, or first of 2 layers for extra strength and durability for large commercial projects such as parking lots or laneways.

HL3 (Hot Mix Asphalt Level 3):

  • HL3 is a fine-graded asphalt mixture suitable for low-traffic pavements, such as residential streets and parking lots.
  • It contains a higher proportion of fine aggregates, which enhances its ability to resist cracking and provide a smoother surface finish.
  • Used as a top coat on HL8 for heavy duty construction. May be used on its own for medium-light duty mix. - This is what is typically used in driveways.

HL3a (Hot Mix Asphalt Level 3a):

  • HL3a is similar to HL3 but designed specifically for thin lift overlays or surface treatments.
  • It offers improved surface characteristics and is often used for pavement preservation and maintenance purposes on existing roads.

In summary, the main differences among HL5, HL8, HL3, and HL3a lie in their aggregate gradations, binder contents, and intended applications. HL5 is used for heavy-duty pavements, HL8 for heavy duty/intermediate applications, HL3 for low-traffic pavements, and HL3a for thin overlays and surface treatments. These different mixtures are tailored to meet the specific performance requirements and traffic conditions of various road projects.
